The Bergen Chapter of SEAS Basic Sailing Courses are taught by SEAS certified instructors, following the American Sailing Association (ASA) basic sailing standard, and are intended to teach the basics of sailing to those who have never been on a sailboat as well as those with some experience.

Curriculum

The basic sailing course consists of up to12 hours of classroom instruction in which you will learn:

  • Sailing terms

  • Points of sail

  • Sail trim

  • Launching

  • Mooring

  • Rules of the road

  • Boating safety.

what you get

Two days of water sessions, with actual sailing experience on the Woodland Lake Pequannock, NJ.

Free year of membership in SEAS Bergen chapter ($60 value) entitles you to additional learning opportunities, open practice sails, and social events.

All graduates will have gained the confidence, experience and knowledge to sail a boat.

You must be in good physical condition and able to swim to take the course.

Schedule

Basic Sailing classroom sessions are conducted at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 271 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne, NJ 07506.

Enter through the parking lot at the rear of the building.

Sessions are Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning at 7:00 pm.

Water sessions are conducted at Woodland Lake in Pequannock Township, NJ.

Sessions are usually on Saturday starting at 9:00 am.

In the event of inclement weather, water sessions may be postponed until the next day, or at a later date.
