Basic Sailing 2024 - Session 2 (July)

Basic sailing course includes 4 evening classroom sessions, 2 days on the water with sloops, and all training materials. Successful completion of the course earns you the SEAS Basic Sailing Certification. Along with the training, you will also get a one year membership to SEAS Bergen Chapter ($60 value).

Classroom - July 9, 11, 16, 18
Water Sessions – July 13, 20

Classroom Sessions: Hawthorne, NJ - St. Clement's Episcopal Church: 271 Lafayette Avenue, Hawthorne, NJ 07506. (classes start at 7:00 pm). Enter through the parking lot at the rear of the building.

Water Sessions starting at 9:00 am: Woodland Lake, Pequannock, NJ.

In the event of inclement weather, water sessions may be postponed until the next day, or at a later date.

Additional practice sessions at Greenwood Lake on our 19' O'Day or on other boats in our teaching fleet.

Pequannock residents are eligible for a 15% discount on class fees.

The Bergen Chapter of SEAS Basic Sailing Courses are taught by SEAS National certified instructors, following American Sailing Association textbook and class materials, are intended to teach the basics of sailing to those who have never been on a sailboat as well as those with some experience.

The basic sailing course consists of 12 hours of classroom instruction in which you will learn:

  • Sailing terms

  • Points of sail

  • Sail trim

  • Launching

  • Mooring

  • Rules of the road

  • Boating safety.

Two days of water sessions, with actual sailing experience on a lake or reservoir is also included.

All graduates will have gained the confidence, experience and knowledge to sail a boat.

You must be in good physical condition and able to swim to take the course.
